Don Grant & Yoka De Houwer, Hydroponic Herb Growers

The AVL project is sited at Tasman Bay Herbs Ltd. in Riwaka, 7kms north of Motueka. Tasman Bay Herbs is an award winning company established in 1996 by Don Grant and Yoka De Houwer, selling top quality spray-free fresh herbs to customers around New Zealand.

Don and Yoka became involved with the aquaponic trial while socialising with Ashley one night. Don had been interested in aquaponics for a while but didn’t know where to start, so was excited to become a key part in Ashley’s plans.

The couple offered to site the trial greenhouse at their Dehra Doon farm in Riwaka. The idea was for Yoka, who is ‘Chief Herb Grower’, to use her vast hydroponic growing experience to compare the difference between hydroponically and aquaponically grown herbs and salad greens.

If the experiment is deemed to be successful, Yoka will consider converting the 1,600 sqm hydroponic greenhouse at Tasman Bay Herbs to aquaponics.

Don was the Project Manager during the construction stage of the trial and has been instrumental in getting the aquaponically grown produce approved under Tasman Bay Herbs food safety programme, the first aquaponics grower in the world to achieve this.  Yoka has, together with Wilson, fine tuned the growing systems.
